CBMIC offers seven accredited Nova Scotia Workplace Education courses this winter tailored to the entertainment industry
The Province of Nova Scotia and the Cape Breton Music Industry Cooperative (CBMIC) are excited to offer another semester of Labour, Skills and Immigration Workplace Education. These courses will teach essential skills to navigate the industry and business, and the necessary tools to expand the participants’ industry knowledge and provide viable career options for those who want to make a living in the entertainment industry. “As a self-managed artist and founder of the new festival Blueberry Jam, taking Nova Scotia Workplace Education’s Social Media for Marketing course is a well-timed blessing. Our instructor Stephen Antle is well-versed in the material and keeps everything recent. With the intimate class size, we can also take what we are learning and apply it to our own current personal projects and talk openly amongst the class. Thank you to Cape Breton Music Industry Cooperative for making this available,” states Rankin MacInnis of Rankin MacInnis and the Broken Reeds, and the Blueberry Jam music festival in Mabou Cape Breton.
The province of Nova Scotia’s investment of $39,000 will enable 84 participants to take these courses this winter. Courses include Legal Essentials, Website Design, Project Management, Proposal Writing, Social Media, Content Marketing and Communication Skills for Leaders Level 1. Registration opens Monday, December 27th, with classes beginning the week of the 17th of January. Get information and register by visiting CBMIC on Facebook or Instagram and at the Cape Breton Music Industry Association website at cbmic.ca. These classes will be virtual this semester and are limited to participants.

CBMIC is honoured to welcome back Stephen Antle as a course instructor. Stephen’s expertise in the music industry and its logistics is invaluable to our artists. Dancer, Performer, Choreographer and teacher Sabra MacGillivray attended several courses offered through CBMIC by the province, “I thoroughly enjoyed the courses that I took through CBMIC! I felt like the covered topics were the missing pieces I needed to further my career in the entertainment industry. Stephen is a wealth of information, and his approach to the courses was so practical and motivational. We got the opportunity to apply what we learned to our own personal journeys. The small class sizes made me feel very comfortable to contribute to in-class discussions, and sharing with one another was very inspiring!” Many talented Nova Scotian and Cape Breton artists attended the first-course session, including ECMA award-winning R&B performer and songwriter Jamie Sparks. “I thought the course was well structured, well-timed and presented by a qualified and experienced instructor. The class is immersed in good conversation throughout. Stephen Antle did a great job sharing the course material weaved in with his many years of experience and knowledge, leaving me with something tangible I could apply to my business right away. I learned a lot, and I thought it was well worth my time,” stated Jamie.
In addition, CBMIC is pleased to bring on veteran course instructor Chris Lewis who will teach Website Design Level 1. Finally, practicing lawyer Corinne Boudreau will teach Music Business Law in the Legal Essentials course. CBMIC Board member Eirinn Fraser states, “I’m very pleased that we can offer such vital courses to Cape Breton and Nova Scotian artists. Knowledge and the proper tools are key to navigating the Canadian music industry. I have taken several Workplace Education courses over the years with course instructors Chris Lewis and Stephen Antle and am currently involved in two of our offerings and just graduated last week from project management offered by the Strait Area Chamber. I’m pleased we are offering project management, among others, this January. I intend on taking four this winter and look forward to meeting and reuniting with the new class.” Cape Breton singer-songwriter and bluesman Jon Hines participated this fall, “It is essential to learn to grow and advance as a professional and a person. There are multiple tools available for people in arts that some or most don’t know how to access or use. These courses offer the help and guiding hand to help you pursue the goals you set forth. A must set of courses for anybody looking to advance themselves forward”.
