Aaron MacDonald

Artist

Out of the woods of Mabou, a little town that beats in the musical heart of western Cape Breton Island, comes the soulful, ever-captivating, folk-rock singer Aaron MacDonald. It’s this small-town lifestyle that breeds much of the inspiration for this grizzled ECMA nominee. Aaron has pounded the East Coast and Canadian music scene for many years, now armoured with new material and a desire to get it to the people, he’s back from the shadows of Route 19. This indie songwriter is quietly making his mark despite the pandemic. His first single this year, “Gonna Get There” hit #1 on the East Coast with his outlaw country follow-up, “My Soul & Me”, making an East Coast Top 5 splash, Aaron MacDonald has undoubtedly stepped back into the East Coast Music scene. He has been named as one of CBC Music Searchlight’s Top 100 Emerging Artists of 2021.

“Traditional yet innovative”, says Irish Music Magazine. The 2022 East Coast Music Award nominee draws on his Cape Breton fiddle roots and features sounds from across genres and lands. Latin influences with congas, classical and jazz elements, and urban hip hop groove marry original music with old country tradition. His arrangements have stimulating new chords to compliment the fresh fiddle phrases, presenting that classic Cape Breton sound in a way that might be, according to Irish tradition bearer Martin Hayes, “continually growing”.

No stage? Make one! That is the simple philosophy that drives singer/songwriter Robbie Simms, a veteran of Cape Breton's music and theatre scenes who's powerhouse vocal style has garnered much attention since the 1990's. Wrought with a grungy, blues inspired soul, Simms' music beats with a poet's heart and can best be described as a flavour of pop ordered off the menu, best enjoyed on a long bus ride between Sydney and Seattle. In addition to writing and recording music, Robbie has appeared in countless stage productions and is also a co-founder and lead guitarist/vocalist for 'The Ashbys' since 2016.
